He was known simply as Halston, but Roy Halston Frowick was the first American luxury designer. His design aesthetic was feminine, glamorous and sophisticated, having arisen from his work as a milliner (hatmaker) for the famous. He rose to fashion stardom as designer for Jackie Kennedy's pillbox hat, and for celebrities like Kim Novak and Gloria Swanson. As hats became less important as a fashion accessory, Halston began designing ready to wear in 1969. One of his most important contributions to fashion was getting rid of things that don't work on clothing, like buttons that don't button, ruffles, and zippers that don't zip.
