Sold in more than 120 countries, Jockey underwear is undeniably a household name. The company story began in 1876, when Samuel Thrall Cooper began making socks for lumberjacks. The company motto was "Satisfying the Human Need for Comfort," and they have been operating under this mission statement ever since. The Black Cat hosiery for the family evolved out of this need, and the men's underwear originated in 1898. In the 1900s, Cooper Underwear Company started producing White Cat Underwear, which manufactured men's union suits, a one-piece long underwear that soon developed into union suits with short legs, which were sold in revolutionary cellophane bags, a real boon to the retailers. In 1934, a postcard showing a man in a bikini swimsuit inspired the one and only Jockey brief.

One of the first celebrity endorsements came from Babe Ruth in 1947, with many more to follow. In the 1950s, Cooper's Underwear (still the company name) advertised in Sports Illustrated magazine and welcomed Jockey Skants fashion underwear into the fold. The Jockey Menswear corporate name did not enter the picture until 1971. In 1978, Donna Wolf Steigerwaldt became the president of Jockey International, which then introduced Jockey for Her in 1980. Debra Steigerwaldt Waller replaced her mother as Jockey Chairman and CEO in 2001.
